Ellen Somer has the retail business in her blood. "I used to make boxes in the basement of my dad's store, and I remember loving the action,” says Ellen. From a young age, she knew she wanted to be her own boss and do whatever it took to make customers happy.
It was 1994 when Ellen found her own retail niche. While shopping on Avenue Road's uptown strip, she noticed there was nowhere to buy great hosiery. “I envisioned a neighbourhood store full of socks and hosiery, a casual place where you could wander in and browse with your kids and your dogs,” Ellen says. And that’s exactly what her store, Out On A Limb, has become.
Her mom came up with the catchy name, says Ellen with a laugh. “Here we were, going out on a limb opening the first store of its kind in the area, and focusing on hosiery and socks for your limbs!”
You don’t have to go downtown to find the best and latest in fashion hose and nylons. It’s been over 20 years since owner Ellen Somer turned a childhood love of merchandising (her Dad was in retail) into this well-stocked shop on Avenue Road, north of Lawrence. The comprehensive selection of socks and stockings is a boon to busy women. The shop welcomes strollers and pets, so you can stop by without having to leave your kids and dog at home. Over the years, Somer has expanded her product line to include sportswear and accessories as well.
Located slightly north of the downtown core, this specialty shop began by carrying products such as pantyhose, socks and leggings but has since expanded to include more clothing items (all of which would pair nicely with a pair of tights, mind you). The store stocks casual tights and leggings from a wide variety of brands and designers, so it’s a great place to visit for everyday basics.
