Any small business will measure their success in the first two years. But for some new ventures like The Helm Clothing, success can come almost immediately. Since August of 2012, this boutique has advised and supplied many of Edmonton’s gentlemen with new styles on the cutting edge of fashion.
The Helm clients are lawyers, bankers, business owners and physicians, but the age range is quite wide. Both young professionals and industry leaders come by the shop to sharpen their image.
“We thought that the hardest part of a small business would be getting clientele,” says co-owner Brad Kahler. “But it seems that there was a real hunger for a personalized menswear boutique staffed by knowledgeable people who love their job.” Brad has always been interested in fashion, which was part of the reason he partnered with Chad to start their own shop.
For the fashionable man who appreciates the beauty of a fitted suit, The Helm is a men’s boutique where you can buy made-to-measure or custom-bespoke business attire, as well as casual weekend wear from brands around the world. Custom fittings use quality fabrics sourced from distinguished mills and can be ready in a little over a week.
The Helm caters exclusively to men, so any gentlemen who appreciate not having to search a store frantically for their section will appreciate this sleek, minimal store. They carry dress shirts from Hugo Boss Tailored, Corneliani and AMI. These brands are all full of investment pieces, so be prepared to drop anywhere from $169 to $325 for a collared shirt.
When I asked my gentlemen friends where they prefer to buy their suits in Edmonton. One of them simply said: “You have money to burn? The Helm.” Their suits, while exquisite, will cost you a pretty penny. Ralph Lauren Black Label and Corneliani suits do not come cheap. But, there is the occasional suit from the Helm collection or Luigi Bianchi that costs under a grand. Decide your budget beforehand, because once you’re there and put on a beautiful suit, you won’t want to leave without it.
