Best places to grab a brew in Vancouver’s Marpole

Marpole may be a bit removed from the rest of Vancouver’s busy nightlife scene, but there’s still plenty of action happening down by the Fraser River. From brewery-fresh ales to breathtaking waterfront views, here’s just a sampling of what you can catch down in the Southside. [Photo credit: iStock/piskunov]

Milltown Bar & Grill

101 9191 Bentley St, Vancouver, BC V6C 2X8

Just about as south as you can get in the city, Milltown Bar & Grill is located on its own island between Vancouver and Richmond (it’s only accessible on the Vancouver side). The patio views are as breathtaking as Milltown’s reclaimed Douglas Fir interior decor is rustic. The drink menu is likewise rugged and refined, meaning you could just as easily cue up a bold Okanagan Spring lager on tap as you could a crisp and fruity local riesling.

The Yard Cafe

8482 Granville St, Vancouver, BC V6P 4Z7

Whether you’re pulling up to the bar for a locally made brew or to catch someone singing a karaoke favourite – or perhaps both – The Yard Cafe is a perfectly pleasant Marpole experience. The small-ish room is big on value, from $3.50 sleeves at happy hour to live local singer-songwriters premiering new tunes.

Cravings Bistro

8804 Osler St, Vancouver, BC V6P 4G2

People have been coming to this longtime Marpole favourite to catch Canucks games for years. The drink menu, meanwhile, has evolved to include plenty of local crafts like Parallel 49 and Red Truck, while memorable food items include the Swiss cheese and pineapple-topped Hawaiian burger and the home baked lasagna.

Dogwood Brewing Ltd

8284 Sherbrooke St, Vancouver, BC V5X 4E8

Pulling up to Dogwood for a growler fill or a four-pack of London Fog ale is a must, but if you're not in a rush, the brewery's tasting room is a great place to raise a glass. Try popping in when the organic microbrewery opens a fresh cask for its fans, or you can sidle up to your table with a sampler rack. DJ events and pizzas of the week also help make Dogwood one of Marpole’s top dog options.

The Flying Beaver Bar

4760 Inglis Dr, Richmond, BC V7B 1W4

The Flying Beaver is ready to help you take Marpole nightlife to new heights. Situated on the Fraser River by YVR’s South Terminal, the waterside location offers plenty of idyllic views of floatplanes and local wildlife. Craft brew fans will likewise be in awe of the number of B.C. beers on tap. Considering the spot is a little off-grid from regular transit and taxi routes, note that The Flying Beaver offers a complimentary shuttle service to those staying for more than a round.

Whether you call it Hastings-Sunrise or the East Village, you can find plenty of nighttime fun in the neighbourhood right beside the PNE.
