    A Hidden Gem

The entrance is hidden and small. You take the stairs up and open an old wooden door to enter a beautiful and elegant old-fashioned dining room. Live guitar plays intermittently in the background with some Portuguese songs. We left our wine and food choices to our waiter, and we were not disappointed. The bottle of Portuguese Dona Maria was quite flavourful and fresh. The potato and kale soupe was just lovely. The seafood platter (which must be the Portuguese version of the paella) was very generous with everything from a whole lobster to mussels. While not spicy, it had no fishy smell to it at all. The deserts were as delightful. We left very happy.

An institution since 1972, Solmar restaurant serves Portuguese cuisine made with Quebec ingredients. Of course, fish and seafood are featured, but you may prefer Portuguese tapas or Portuguese-style filet mignon. To accompany your meal, their wine cellar offers a wide selection of Portos and wines. Every Friday and Saturday night, a guitarist accompanies a singer, who most often sings fado. The artists change every week but their music always creates an elegant, romantic atmosphere, which, with the help of your meal, will transport you to the seaside in Portugal. Note that the restaurant has a private room.

Opened in 1972, Solmar has been a pioneer of Portuguese cuisine in Montréal. At its current location since 1979, in a two-century-old building in Old Montréal, the dining establishment focuses on fish and other seafood, with mystical fado performances on weekends adding to the atmosphere. La Sauvagine, on the ground floor, offers market-fresh cuisine and specializes in Québec game. A wraparound outdoor terrace is accessible to patrons of both restaurants.
