Food- The Chinese food is as good as it gets here in Waterloo and they are generally pretty consistent from the 5+ times I visited the restaurant, but one of 'Green Bean with Hot Garlic Sauce' was way too sour and one portion of my Chicken Fried Rice had too little chicken in it. Price & Portion- Price is very expensive and the portion are pretty small compare with other restaurants. On take-outs, rice covers atleast 60% of the plate, poorly proportional. Service- Nothing spectacular, but one encounter left a bad taste in my mouth (pun intended). Their flyers states '10% OFF on Cash Take-Out Order over 20.00 (Before Tax)', yet they refuse to give me the discount on an order over $35, stating the 'Dinner Special' was not included when they made no mention of it on the flyer. They hesitated to give me the discount. Atmosphere- Decent, not bad, haven't used washroom. 2 TV's are in the restaurant playing chinese channels. Conclusion- As I found more Chinese restaurants around Waterloo, it'll be pretty hard for me to return to China Garden after that unpleasant incident. The price and food portion is a huge ripoff as I get to compare with other restaurants in the area.
In terms of authenticity, this is a very good Chinese restaurant. I have tried this place a few times. I have been consistently happy with the food. Even the lunch specials, which tend to be less appetizing than a la carte items, are very good. The service is basic, and the dining area isn't exactly posh, but the food is what matters.
manager is very friendly, seems like they renovated it a bit and atmosphere is much more pleasant. Food was great as usual.
Fair prices, authentic chinese food, perfect congee!!!!
fried rice had meat was uncooked... and there was some dish washing detergent in it. noodles were cold and had some hair in it. i will never go there again
food was unappropriately expensive because of the quantity on the dish. dish was so small, I could have easily eaten 3 or 4 dishes on my own. I wasn't paying, so I did not eat that many dishes. If I were eating alone and were very rich, I would have recieved a bill in the $40
10 tiny pieces of chicken for $12 (mostly onions, red peppers), 1 piece of eggplant (very small) and cost $12. washroom was dirty and coated with deposits and smelly. total cost for table of 4 was $40.
Best Chinese restaurant in town, hands down ! Their hot and sour soup comes free with the lunch specials, and is so good. Sweet and Sour Pork is fantastic, ten thumbs way UP !
I don't understand why this place is so popular. They use canned mushrooms, first of all, which is really unforgivable in a Chinese restaurant. Their fried rice is tasteless and strangely textured. The service is good, but the restaurant decor is frightening.
The food was excellent and the atmosphere was very welcoming. Although these factors all contributed to a wonderful experience at China Garden, I particularly enjoyed the company I was with. I enjoyed watching my date try to negotiate her fried noodles with her chop sticks, as well as how the lighting in the restaurant made her hair glisten. She looked so cute! And we had such a great conversation, I got completely lost in her eyes. Thanks China Garden, I will definitely return!
Good brisket and tendon. Very flavourful soup. Could be a bit too flavourful for some (tastes good when you eat it, makes you very thirsty after). Wonton was decent too. They're not the best I've ever tried but I'm not sure if you could get comparable HK style beef brisket in town.
The owner / manager is friendly. The atmosphere isn't anything special, but there seems to be a tonne of regulars and the food was great.
Food is pretty compared to other chinese restaurants in the Waterloo area. GIGANTIC shrimp in the shrimp and vegetables dish. Excellent. Many other places will give you tiny shrimp. Good food overall. Attentive service, and the owner came to ask us how it was as well.
Overall, good value for money. Cantonese food in a very basic environment. Fast, friendly service with a good selection of well prepared dishes. The restaurant appears to have many regular clients
