I had been wanting to try this place out for a while, and based on the reviews posted, I thought it could go either way... there aren't any other Portuguese restaurants in Ottawa that I know of though, so I decided to give it a try. We showed up when the restaurant was almost empty, and the only guy serving didn't seem too happy to see us. It wasn't right before closing time (not that that excuses resenting having to serve someone), but for some reason this guy just did not want to see us there. The most bizarre thing is that he was more than pleasant with a family that was finishing up their meals.... When it came time to take our plates though, he *literally* picked up the cutlery and dishes and tossed them onto his tray, in the process knocking them over and having to pick them up, and toss them together AGAIN. The mediocre, spectacularly overly salted food alone was enough to stop me from returning, but frankly even if the food had been fantastic, I wouldn't give anyone who hires such a disrespectful clown another cent of my money. Stay categorically away from this place!
We were visiting from Montreal with my cousins from Portugal and they were missing some good churrasco. So we tried this restaurant, we were very pleased and full at the end of our meal. For me the only downside of the place is that the waitress didn't speak a word of Portuguese. Will definitely return even if it is 170 km from home.
This place makes the best food ever! The atmosphere is cozy and pleasant. The owner/cook is a wonderful host and a killer cook. The chef's potatoes are out of this world and I loved the steak on the stone that you grill to your perfection yourself (as it is served on a red hot stone). I love the house wine (red) and I visit this restaurant once a month. I would go more if I could afford it on my budget. This place is a gem in downtown Ottawa! In regards to a previous review a lady wrote about cod fish....it's not garlic butter...it's olive oil and that is what salted cod tastes like. Authentically Portuguese, you may want to stick at home with captain highliner fish sticks instead.
I always enjoy grilled sardines in the Portuguese manner and this keeps me coming back. They are always good here, and there just aren’t that many restaurants in Ottawa that serve them. The menu has a good balance of meat and seafood and one can eat lean or piggy as the mood strikes you. It is a good restaurant for those occasions when one wants to dine at a place that is not too pretentious.
The food was tasty. The waitresses were friendly. The location and parking are excellent. Nice, clean atmosphere. I went there with friends, both for dinners and lunch buffets. No problems at all. And the prices are reasonable. And their coffee is the best.
I ate the best seafood in my life there. You have to try their mixed petisco (seafood mix plate). I also had a delicious red snapper. Never knew the portuguese were so good at cooking seafood.
Love this place. I go often, have ordered many different dishes from their menu, and am never dissapointed. Food is great for a good price. Great house wine too!
Go 4-5 times a year, we always have the same thing. Chicken, pork, beef, ribs, sausage, potatoes in a large pan ... sides of various breads and some olives and a nice salad. Plus two types of hot sauces ... it's awesome! Are usual bill is about $50 and we always leave satisfied. That's why we always go back.
I went there with my wife and 10 yr-old son. We ordered a combo that came with pork loin, chicken, beef, and ribs. We ate all we could and there was still some meat left. The side of roasted potatoes were great and their salad dressing was very tasty. When you go ask for their special meat sauce. I have no idea what is in it, but it was divine.
The sausage entree was really neat. On fire and cooked b4 your eyes. Delicious sausage. The spicy chicken was great. Good house wine for a good price.
This is a fun, unassuming place. The chicken is really, really good, and it's one of the only Portuguese restaurants in the city. I was really impressed and felt really comfortable there. Also, pretty decent house wines to accompany the chicken, potato and bread meals.
Well worth the visit. We had mussels, beef kabobs and sardines. The service was warm and friendly, and the atmosphere intimate and welcoming. We highly recommend this restaurant, as we found the good was excellent, prompt, and the prices in line with the quality of the experience.
The Kale soup was very good but I was very disappointed by the grilled cod, which took forever to arrive. The cod was drenched, swimming (pardon the pun) in a tepid pool of garlic butter. The outside of the fish was tough; I was barely able to cut through it. And the inside was overcooked and overwhelmed by that nasty garlic butter. The potatoes were thinly sliced rounds, overcooked until they were nearly inedible, except for the ones that were softened by their extended bath in the garlic butter (which actually resembled oil more than butter). And they have the nerve to charge $18 for this dish! My companion's food was hardly better - he had a combination platter and the chicken was especially disappointing. Never again!
Bread cold. Grilled half chicken served lukewarm. Combination platter good size but not much flavour; included 2 one inch nubs of sausage, hardly worth writing home about. Mussel plate surprisingly good, particularly in light of the other mediocre dishes. Service: not with a smile, somewhat abrupt and non-existent when time came to pay bill. Lots of parking available - I wonder why?!
The price was fair however the food lack the portuguesse zest. The service was horrible and cold like the chicken was. Why do they even bother to mention the Sausage when you only get less then a 1/4 of it. On a good note..there was ample parking and why do you think is that?
Went for the lunch buffet, had to eat fries while waiting over 1/2 hour for the chicken to come out. When we finally went for some we were told that we've had enough and can't eat anymore! Unbelievable.
