From humble beginnings in their kitchen at home, Michel and Helen Labonté opened The Lazy Loaf and Kettle in 1994 with cookies and muffins. The couple had a passion for baking and decided to change their careers to be able to stay at home with their children. They soon realized there was a potential for more and opened up their flagship location on Parkdale Crescent. And what started out as a dream, turned into a staple for Calgarians. Now their son Elliot helps run the family business with his sister, Andrea.
Best known for its kettle bread — a nine-grain homemade loaf that is their signature bread — they also make cakes, cookies, soups and more all from scratch every day. They also serve up a full breakfast until 3 p.m. and a lunch-style menu the rest of the day. To accommodate the growing number of people with dietary restrictions, The Lazy Loaf and Kettle has evolved its menu to include many gluten-free items like sandwiches, soups, brownies, cookies, macaroons and more.

Though the Lazy Loaf & Kettle is best known for its soup and sandwiches, the café and bakery also serves delectable desserts. Especially good is its chocolate-explosion cake. The double-layered chocolate cake is covered with cream-cheese icing and a chocolate ganache. Need we say more?
View this Smart ListA favourite of Montgomery residents, the Lazy Loaf and Kettle offers up a traditional Western-style breakfast menu. Home-baked toast and eggs with the usual, omelettes, eggs Benedict, French toast, granola and pancakes all are served in generous portions. The side-street restaurant is on the small side, seating less than 50 patrons, but turnover is quick.

Just a hop off Memorial Drive on the main floor of an unassuming brown commercial building, Lazy Loaf & Kettle also serves up fresh-roasted coffee, sandwiches made with fresh-baked bread, pancakes, and desserts – the massive ginger cookie sandwich with cream cheese icing is deadly. The warm atmosphere and handiness to the Bow River pathway make it perfect for a nosh for one.
